Burnt Soup

“Burnt Soup” follows the adventures of the Sendai Mage Police, a unit set up to combat magic related crime. Burnt Soup is set in the same time and city as Boiled Spoons, and gives more information about the world the characters live in.

Originally, I was just going to add two police officers, Sarah and Kaori, to the cast of characters in Boiled Spoons, but I then decided to feature them in their own comic, enabling me to add the other officers of the S.M.P.D.

The stories will be more action based, although of course the characters are still one of the most important elements of the comic. Hopefully it will avoid too many comparisons with shows such as Silent Mobius, You’re Under Arrest and Hyperpolice, although the last one may be asking too much, as it does feature a Kyubi sorceress!

Here’s a quick view of the characters:

Senior Officer Sarah Wallace

The main character, Sarah is a Kyubi (nine tailed foxgirl). Originally from Australia, she is a accomplished sorceress. She is the second in command of the unit, taking charge in Lt.Gorman’s absence. She is extremely reliable, but has a rather bizarre sense of humour.

After seeing Hyperpolice, I just had to have a Kyubi character. Making her Australian allowed me to get away with some awful gags...

Officer Kaori Mitaka

Kaori is the partner of Sarah Wallace. She prefers to put her faith in modern firearms rather than spells. She has quite a collection of heavy calibre weapons, which she will attempt to use instead of her police issue handgun whenever possible.

I nearly wrote Kaori as a Catgirl, until I realised what I was doing...

Officer Ming Hua Xian

Ming Hua has recently transferred to Sendai from the Hong Kong Mage Police. She is skilled in the martial arts and is judged far too reckless for her own good. This extends to her personal life, as she is an inveterate gambler.

Well I had to have at least one Catgirl character, didn’t I ?

Officer Karen Sharman

Karen is an android officer, designated as Ming Hu’s partner. She was assigned to Ming Hua in the hope that someone like an android would curb Ming Hua’s excessive zeal. Unfortunately, the reverse has happened and she has picked up a lot of Ming Hua’s bad habits (otherwise known as the dangerous ones...). She has also picked up her partner’s love of gambling, but is a lot better at it...

She was created at the Stark Systems factory in Osaka. As a result of this she has a strong Osaka accent.

Karen is based on a real Karen Sharman, a mad woman whose house is filled with swords, spears and other sharp implements. If she ever finds out about this, she’ll kill me...

Lt. David Gorman

Lt Gorman transferred from England five years ago after serving in the Birmingham Mage Police for ten years. He was one of the first police officers to graduate from the Coventry Magical University, one of the top mage schools in the world.

He is a channeller, a special type of spell caster with unusual abilities that will become apparent in some of the stories.

For those of you who don’t know, the real Dave Gorman is a comedian, who set off on a quest to find 54 namesakes. This was this most completely brilliant thing I’d heard of in a long time, so I had to name the Lieutenant after him!

Miranda Wallace

Sarah’s Mum. Miranda is perceived by her daughter (and the other Kyubi) as being somewhat irresponsible. Her taste in clothing runs to leather jackets and short skirts.

She is 75 years old , but due to the fact that Kyubi age slower than humans, she only looks about 35. She behaves as if she were 15...
